In 1949, Murphy published To Hell and Back, the best-selling autobiography upon which the film was based. According to a June 1953 Hollywood Reporter "Rambling Reporter" item, Spec McClure was the book's ghost writer. Although actor Julian Upton is listed before Gordon Gebert in the opening credits, in the closing credits he is listed last.
