Michael Shayne is a private detective who is disliked greatly by Pete Rafferty, local chief of police detectives. Rafferty notifies the newspaper press that he is going to close Shayne's agency, just as Michael is about to be hired by the wealthy Eleanor Ramsey, who is being blackmailed.
Murder Is My Business is the twelfth Mike Shayne novel and was published in 1945. In it, Shayne, who apparently is not great at having high-paying clients, agrees to take a job from an elderly woman whose son had been in Mexico when his draft letter came.
Once alone, Ramsey admits that he is having money problems and asks Mike to connect him with someone who will stage a robbery of his wife's jewels, so that he can use the insurance money to save his business.
