CAROUSEL CONDENSED SYNOPSIS. In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow captivates a gentle, if determined, millworker, Julie Jordan. They marry, but Billy loses his job and Julie becomes pregnant.
Carousel is a 1956 American drama fantasy musical film based on the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical of the same name, which in turn was based on Ferenc Molnár's 1909 non-musical play Liliom. The film stars Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones and was directed by Henry King.
Overview. Billy Bigelow has been dead for 15 years. Now outside the pearly gates, he long ago waived his right to go back to Earth for a day. He has heard that there is a problem with his family: namely with his wife Julie Bigelow, née Jordan, and his child he hasn't met.
Directed by Henry King with a screenplay by Phoebe and Henry Ephron, the 20th Century Fox film adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel premiered just a year after Oklahoma! made its way to the big screen. The film starred Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones and Cameron Mitchell.
