      • Dial 1119 1950 ★★★ Watched May 13, 2024 Robert Mitchell’s review published on Letterboxd: This is a strong premise, well set up and played out broadly in real time. However, the direction doesn't take full advantage of the potential tension and the performances are generally quite lacking.

  3. I suspect he never got roles like this again because the public wouldn't accept him just like Tyrone Power in Nightmare Alley. This film is brutally uncompromising on its view of the death penalty. Opponents of capital punishment will not be pleased, but Dial 1119 is still a great noir film.

Critic Jeff Stafford liked the film, writing: "A taut and suspenseful B-movie, Dial 1119 is distinguished by the crisp black-and-white cinematography of Paul C. Vogel (He worked on such film noir favorites as Lady in the Lake, 1947) and the excellent ensemble cast which includes Virginia Field, Andrea King, Leon Ames, Keith Brasselle, and ...

  8. Sep 12, 2020 · A nailbiter of a film noir about a mentally unhinged man who holds a group of patrons hostage in a bar and the subsequent standoff with the police. This film is incredibly suspenseful, and for such a low-budget throwaway B picture, it has an awful lot of style and directorial flair.
