American Sonya Tuchman (Faye Dunaway) has traveled to a Viennese sanatorium in hopes of curing her sickly son, Edmund (David Eberts), of his chronic asthma. At the facility, Sonya and Edmund become entranced with Baron Alexander von Hauenstein (Klaus Maria Brandauer). After entertaining young Edmund, the baron falls for Sonya, who is in a loveless marriage.
