- 1972-’73: Can’t Buy A Thrill & Countdown to Ecstasy. When Steely Dan arrived on the scene in 1972, “progressive rock” was in vogue, with bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis catching the fancy of many listeners.
- 1974: Pretzel Logic. This album featured the hit “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” a bluesy bossa nova that borrowed from Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father.”
- 1975: Katy Lied. In retrospect, it’s stunning to realize that Jeff Porcaro was only nineteen years old when he recorded Katy Lied . The album is a tone poem, a surreal view into the minds of Becker and Fagen.
- 1976: The Royal Scam. Once again, Becker and Fagen continued to raise the stakes. On The Royal Scam, they took rock ‘n’ roll arrangements to a new level of craftsmanship.

Hodder was demoted to backing vocalist, while Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Joe Cocker) and teenage hotshot Jeff Porcaro (later of Toto) played the drums on Pretzel Logic. “I understand it now, but I resented it then,” Hodder said in 1985.

Early in 1972, the original Steely Dan group - guitarist Denny Dias, guitarist Jeff Baxter, drummer Jim Hodder, and with Donald and Walter on keyboards and bass respectively - started rehearsing in an unfinished wing of the ABC building.
