History. The group was inspired by trumpeter Donald Byrd [2] and featured some of his Howard University students: Kevin Toney ( keyboards ), Keith Killgo ( vocals, drums ), Joe Hall ( bass guitar ), Allan Barnes ( saxophone, clarinet ), and Barney Perry ( guitar ). Orville Saunders (guitar), and Jay Jones ( flute, saxophone) joined later.

Jan 6, 2020 · While the group was originally a quintet, fortunately three of the original members are still performing with the group; namely guitarist Orville Saunders Jr., bassist Joe Hall and drummer/bandleader Keith Kilgo. Former members were keyboardist Kevin Toney and saxophonist Allan Barnes. Barney Perry also played guitar on some dates.
Donald Byrd, a trumpeter, led the group. He also included some Howard University students, Keith Killgo (vocals), Joe Hall (bass guitar), Allan Barnes, Allan Barnes (saxophone and clarinet), Barney Perry (guitar). Jay Jones (flute and saxophone), Orville Saunders, (guitar) were also later members. In 1973, they signed to Fantasy Records.
