Brownie McGhee (born November 30, 1915, Knoxville, Tennessee, U.S.—died February 16, 1996, Oakland, California) was an American blues singer, guitarist, pianist, songwriter, and longtime partner of the vocalist and harmonica player Sonny Terry.
His father, George Duffield McGhee, was a skilled guitarist and singer. The senior McGhee often teamed up with his brother-in-law, John Evans, a fiddler, to play for local dances and parties. When Brownie was seven years of age, Evans built him a five-string banjo as his first instrument.

Brownie McGhee (1915-1996) was among the first group of artists to receive the National Heritage Fellowship. A blues guitarist and singer, McGhee lived in Oakland, California, at the time of his award, but was born in Knoxville and raised in Kingsport.
