Fort Meade, originally known as Camp Sturgis and later Camp Ruhlen, is a former United States Army post located just east of Sturgis, South Dakota, United States. The fort was active from 1878 to 1944; the cantonment is currently home to a Veterans Health Administration hospital and South Dakota Army National Guard training facilities.
History. Fort Meade was established during the winter of 1878-79 by units of the 1st and 11th Infantry and the reorganized 7th Cavalry. The mission of the 10 company post was to provide military protection against the resentful Sioux for the gold seekers and settlers who had invaded the region both before and after the Black Hills Treaty of 1877.
Aug 25, 2017 · Established at the foot of the 1,200-foot geological formation called Bear Butte, Ruhlen’s mission was to also serve as a construction camp for the new fort being built there. The new fort, Fort Meade, was named for Civil War hero General George Meade.
The Fort Meade Recreation Area is composed of approximately 6,700 acres of forest and grasslands. The area is managed to protect, preserve, and enhance its cultural, historic, recreational, and wildlife values. Attractions include the Fort Meade Cavalry Post, Old Fort Meade Museum, Fort Meade Post Cemetery, and the Centennial Trail.
