Jan 22, 2008 · Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt. Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, diplomat, politician, entrepreneur (born 6 September 1817 in London, England; died 19 September 1893 in Montréal, QC). Galt was one of the prime railway promoters of the 19th century and one of the first to call for a federal union of the British colonies.
There Alexander Galt began a solid classical education under Joseph Braithwaite. But his father’s dismissal by the directors of the Canada Company led to the return of father and son to Great Britain in June 1830.

Born in England in 1817, Alexander Galt immigrated to Sherbrooke in 1835 to work for the newly created British American Land Company, which was chartered to settle large tracts of land in the Eastern Townships.
