John Rettie "Jock" McKernan Jr. (born May 20, 1948) is an American politician who served two terms as the 71st Governor of Maine, from 1987 to 1995. Born in Bangor, Maine, McKernan attended Dartmouth College and then the University of Maine School of Law.
John Rettie McKernan, Jr. served in the Maine Army National Guard, 1970-1973, and was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1972, 1974 and 1976. He was admitted to the Maine bar in 1974 and began practice in Bangor and Portland.
McKernan is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, a director of The American Action Forum and served as Governor of the State of Maine from 1987 to 1995.

JOHN R. McKERNAN JR. was born in Bangor, Maine. In 1970, he received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where he was selected to the All-Ivy League Tennis Team. He joined the Army National Guard after graduation and then enrolled in the University of Maine Law School in 1971.
