Arthur St. Clair was born March 23, 1736 in Thurso, Caithness County, Scotland. At 23 he purchased a commission in the 60th Royal Regiment of Foot and was sent to North America, serving with distinction in the French and Indian War.
Arthur St. Clair was a prominent American political figure and military officer who lived from 1734 to 1818. Born in Scotland, St. Clair immigrated to Pennsylvania in his youth and played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War.
Born in Scotland, Arthur St. Clair unsuccessfully studied anatomy before deciding to enlist in the British army. During the Revolutionary War, St. Clair fought for the Americans, but failed so miserably in defending Fort Ticonderoga that Congress recalled him from service in 1777.
By the end of 1776, he was a brigadier general. St. Clair fought in the early Revolutionary War battles of Trenton and Princeton. In 1777, he was promoted to major general. In July, he abandoned Fort Ticonderoga and faced a court-martial.
