Valdas Adamkus was born into a family of civil servants in Kaunas on 3 November 1926. He studied at the Jonas Jablonskis Elementary School and the Aušra (Dawn) Gymnasium in Kaunas. During World War II, he was involved in the resistance movement for Lithuania‘s independence.
Biografija. Gimė Kaune tarnautojų šeimoje. Tėvas – Ignas Adamkavičius, Nepriklausomybės kovų savanoris, vienas pirmųjų Lietuvos karo aviacijos mokyklos vadovų, vėliau – Kauno geležinkelio stoties policijos viršininkas. Motina dirbo Susisiekimo ministerijoje . Lankė Jono Jablonskio pradžios mokyklą, mokėsi Kauno „Aušros" gimnazijoje.

After two months of such work, I decided to better my life through education. At that time I still lacked a good command of English. I began taking evening courses combined with an English language program.
