William J. Donovan, the head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in World War II and one of the forefathers of today’s special operations forces, was born on New Year’s Day in 1883 in Buffalo, New York.
William J. Donovan (born January 1, 1883, Buffalo, New York, U.S.—died February 8, 1959, Washington, D.C.) was an American lawyer, soldier, and diplomat who directed (1942–45) the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. Donovan began the practice of law in Buffalo in 1907.

William Joseph Donovan was one of the very few American soldiers to have received the U.S. Army’s three highest decorations: the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal. As an infantry commander in World War I Donovan led his troops from the front and was twice wounded.
As a rising young Irish Catholic political star in the largely Anglo-Saxon Protestant Republican establishment, Donovan received appointments as U.S. Attorney in western New York and subsequently Assistant U.S. Attorney General in charge of the Anti-Trust Division under President Calvin Coolidge.
