William Frishe Dean Sr. (August 1, 1899 – August 24, 1981) was a United States Army major general during World War II and the Korean War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 20 and 21, 1950, during the Battle of Taejon in South Korea.
William F. Dean was one of the true heroes of the chaotic early weeks of the Korean War. He led his troops bravely in the face of overwhelming odds. While later criticized for his decision to stay at the front which hampered his ability to see the whole battle at Taejon, Dean did what he could with the resources at hand.

May 25, 2021 · General Dean actually attempted suicide while a captive, out of fear that he break under torture and reveal information to his captors. He also made several unsuccessful escape attempts. During his captivity, General Dean was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Major General William Frishe Dean, Sr. died on 24 August 1981, at the age of 82 and was buried in San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio of San Francisco. He was survived by his wife, Mildred Dern Dean, who died on 2 October 1988 and is buried next to him.
