John Paul Hammerschmidt was born May 4, 1922 in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. He attended The Citadel in South Carolina from 1938 to 1939, then the University of Arkansas until 1941. Hammerschmidt joined the Army Air Corps in 1942.
