Oct 21, 2016 · In marrying the Duke, Consuelo became the cousin of Winston Churchill, who would remain a dear friend and confidant to her throughout her life. In fact, Churchill had been heir to the Duke of Marlborough until Consuelo and the Duke had their first son in 1897, and freed him to pursue a career in politics.
He acted as Lord High Steward at the Coronation of Edward VII. Spencer-Churchill married twice; his 1895 marriage to Consuelo Vanderbilt [d. 1964] of New York produced two sons, but ended in divorce in 1921. On 25 June of that year, he married Gladys Marie Deacon, formerly of Boston.
