Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, FRS (19 June 1809 – 11 August 1885) was an English poet, patron of literature and a politician who strongly supported social justice.
Richard Monckton Milnes was an English politician, poet, and man of letters. While at Trinity College, Cambridge (1827–30), Milnes joined the socially and artistically progressive Apostles Club, which included among its members the poets Alfred Tennyson and Arthur Henry Hallam.
Aug 24, 2016 · Richard Monckton Milnes Houghton, 1st Baron (hou´tən, hô´–), 1809–85, English author. Throughout much of his life he was an active member of Parliament. He was among the first to recognize the genius of Keats and in 1848 published his Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of John Keats.
Houghton held the posts of President of the Statistical Society from 1865 to 1867 and Secretary for Foreign Correspondence of the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1885. Amongst the academic honours he received were DCL (Oxford) 1855, FRS 1868, FSA 1876 and LLD (Edinburgh) 1877.
