Jun 2022. The place de la Comédie is the nerve centre of Montpellier - a broad plaza that runs between the old opera hall at one end and the Esplanade Charles de Gaulle at the other. It is lined on each side by a series of old cafés and fast-food joints, but is also the venue for the local market.

This grand public square is the heart of Montpellier, a center of activity that is busy from daytime until late hours in the evening. The Place de la Comédie is fondly called "l'Oeuf" ("The Egg") because of its elliptical shape.
Principal carrefour du centre-ville, la place de la comédie est créée en 1753 et doit son nom aux théâtres successifs élevés sur son pourtour. Puis, surnommée "Place de l'œuf" en raison de sa forme ovoïde aménagée en 1893, pour que les piétons puissent s'y promener.
