Pažaislis monastery and church form the largest monastery complex in Lithuania, and the most magnificent example of Italian Baroque architecture in the country.
Today, the Pažaislis Camaldolese Monastery complex is considered to be one of the most beautiful late Baroque masterpieces in North and East Europe. Its integral and logical composition evokes a subtle harmony with the surrounding nature. A 2.5-metre tall stone wall covered in tiling separates the monastery gardens from the forest.
The Latin name initially chosen for the monastery, Monte Pacis, can be translated to reflect both the tranquillity of life at the place (“Mountain of Peace”) and the name of its patron (“Mountain of Pacas”). Construction of the stone monastery and church began in 1667.
