Today, the fossil specimens represent the nation's first and only recorded evidence of a nursery herd of ice age Columbian mammoths.

Dec 1, 2023 · General entrance to this park is free, however there is a fee to enter the Dig Shelter. Cash, checks, and most credit cards are accepted. (American Express is not accepted). Federal passes such as the America the Beautiful Annual, Senior, and Access passes do not apply to the access fee.
The five-acre Waco Mammoth National Monument sits within 100+ acres of wooded parkland along the Bosque River. Surrounded by oak, mesquite and cedar trees, the site offers an escape from the modern world and provides a glimpse into the lives of Columbian mammoths.

The Waco Mammoth National Monument was created in 2015 and is a paleontologic dig site. It consists of several fossilized mammoths and some are still in situ, which is really neat to see. There's a walkway above the dig site where you can read information on which bones you're seeing beneath you and there are rangers available for questions.

Waco Mammoth National Monument. Texas, USA, North America. Top choice in Dallas & the Panhandle Plains. In 1978 two Waco arrowhead hunters found a bone in a ravine. It turned out to belong to a Columbian mammoth that had perished there about 68,000 years ago.
