Sheffield Island Light is a historic lighthouse located at the southern end of the Norwalk Islands in Norwalk, Connecticut. It marks the west side of the mouth of the Norwalk River on northern Long Island Sound.
Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Fifty-two-acre Sheffield Island has a colorful history. The largest of the sixteen Norwalk Islands, it has had many previous names: Winnipauk, Little Longe, Longe, White’s, Smith’s, Norwalk, and Home – with the names usually changing to reflect the owner at the time.
Sheffield Island Light was replaced in 1902 by the new Greens Ledge Light farther west. The lighthouse was sold at auction for under $5,000 in 1914 to Thorsten O. Stabell, captain of the Norwalk Yacht Club.
