Rabban Gamaliel II (also spelled Gamliel; Hebrew: רבן גמליאל דיבנה; before c. 80 –c. 118) was a rabbi from the second generation of tannaim. He was the first person to lead the Sanhedrin as nasi after the fall of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
Gamaliel II was the head of the Jews in Palestine in the first and second century, appointed by Vespasian. He settled the dispute between the schools of Hillel and Shammai, and defended Judaism against Christianity and other challenges.
Gamaliel II (flourished 2nd century ad) was the nasi (president) of the Sanhedrin, at that time the supreme Jewish legislative body, in Jabneh, whose greatest achievement was the unification of the important Jewish laws and rituals in a time of external oppression by Rome and internecine quarrels.
