According to the Hebrew Bible, Micah (Hebrew: מִיכָה הַמֹּרַשְׁתִּי Mīḵā hamMōraštī "Micah the Morashtite"), also known as Micheas, was a prophet in Judaism and is the author of the Book of Micah.
The book of Micah provides one of the most significant prophecies of Jesus Christ’s birth in all the Old Testament, pointing some seven hundred years before Christ’s birth to His birthplace of Bethlehem and to His eternal nature (Micah 5:2).

The prophet Micah ministered during the reigns of Jotham (742-735 b.c.), Ahaz (735-715), and Hezekiah (715-687) (cf. Jer 26:18). Since Micah 6 is addressed to “Israel” and ch. 1 speaks of the downfall of Samaria, his career evidently began sometime before 722 b.c.
The Book of Micah is the sixth of the twelve minor prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Ostensibly, it records the sayings of Micah, whose name is Mikayahu (Hebrew: מִיכָיָ֫הוּ), meaning "Who is like Yahweh?", an 8th-century BCE prophet from the village of Moresheth in Judah (Hebrew name from the opening verse: מיכה המרשתי).
The first two sections of the book of Micah develop the prophet’s accusations and warnings against Israel and its leaders. Chapter 1 opens with a poetic description of God appearing over Israel, just like he did at Mount Sinai—with fire, smoke, and earthquake.
