Lake Murray is a reservoir in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is approximately 50,000 acres (20,000 hectares) in size, and has roughly 650 mi (1,050 kilometres) of shoreline. It was impounded in the late 1920s to provide hydroelectric power to the state of South Carolina.
Originally constructed to provide hydroelectric power to all of South Carolina, Lake Murray was once the world’s largest man-made reservoir. Locals and visitors alike come here to enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and just overall relaxation.
Lake Murray is an over hyped man-made lake w/no real beauty, wildlife, and no wonders to behold. It’s the aspiring rich and mildly rich Southern’s “paradise”. The public access is often very crowded as it’s the only place for the common people without boats to access the lake.
Lake Murray. Lake Murray is located in the heart (center) of SC just west of Columbia. This 48,000 acre lower piedmont reservoir is owned by SCE&G and was constructed in the late 1920 s to produce hydroelectric power. At completion the lake s 1.6 mile dam was the largest earthen dam in the world.
In addition to the multiple marina locations, there are 11 public lake access areas available at Lake Murray. Amenities vary by location and include boat launch ramps, fishing piers, restrooms, paved and unpaved parking, gas islands, picnic areas and more.

Lake Murray is a true four-season fishing lake. The lake was built in 1930 with the completion of the Dreher Shoals Dam—more commonly referred to as the Saluda Dam or the Lake Murray Dam—on the Saluda River. The Saluda and Little Saluda rivers form two large arms at Lake Murray’s upper end.
