Itzcoatl (Classical Nahuatl: Itzcōhuātl [it͡sˈkoːwaːt͡ɬ], "Obsidian Serpent", modern Nahuatl pronunciation ⓘ) (1380–1440) was the fourth king of Tenochtitlan, and the founder of the Aztec Empire, ruling from 1427 to 1440.
Under the ruler Itzcóatl (1428–40), Tenochtitlán formed alliances with the neighbouring states of Texcoco and Tlacopan and became the dominant power in central Mexico. Later, by commerce and conquest, Tenochtitlán came to rule an empire of 400 to 500 small states, comprising by 1519 some 5,000,000 to 6,000,000….
Itzcoatl ("Obsidian Serpent"), fourth Mexica ruler or tlatoani ("speaker"), was the son of Acamapichtli, the first tlatoani, and a slave woman. Itzcoatl led the rebellion against the Tepanac polity centered at Azcapotzalco, to which the Mexica had been tributaries.
