Napoleon II (Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte; 20 March 1811 – 22 July 1832) was the disputed Emperor of the French for a few weeks in 1815. He was the son of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise, daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria.

On this day the only legitimate descendant of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, his son Napoleon II, born by the Austrian Archduchess Maria Luisa, died. Napoleon II was born in 1811, and his father was awarded the title of “King of Rome” (Roi de Rome).
Napoleon II remains of symbolic significance in the context of the story of the Bonaparte family and their place in European history. As the recognized head of the family, he gave hope to Bonaparte supporters that one day a Bonaparte might rule again.
Napoleon had only one legitimate child: his son Napoleon François Charles Joseph Bonaparte, also known as the King of Rome, Napoleon II, the Prince of Parma and the Duke of Reichstadt.
Napoléon II was born in Paris in 1811. In 1814, Napoleon I was defeated during the War of the Sixth Coalition and then forced to resign by his own officers. Napoleon I originally wanted Napoleon II to succeed him, but that was rejected by the coalition.
Between 1852 and 1870, there was a Second French Empire, when a member of the Bonaparte dynasty again ruled France: Napoleon III, the youngest son of Louis Bonaparte. However, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, the dynasty was again ousted from the Imperial Throne.
