Cuauhtémoc (Nahuatl pronunciation: [kʷaːʍˈtemoːk] ⓘ, Spanish pronunciation: [kwawˈtemok] ⓘ), also known as Cuauhtemotzín, Guatimozín, or Guatémoc, was the Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521, making him the last Aztec Emperor.
Cuauhtémoc was the 11th and last Aztec emperor, nephew and son-in-law of Montezuma II. Cuauhtémoc became emperor in 1520 on the death of Montezuma’s successor, Cuitláhuac. Hernán Cortés, with powerful Indian allies, was then marching on Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital.
