Howard Hathaway Aiken (March 8, 1900 – March 14, 1973) was an American physicist and a pioneer in computing, being the original conceptual designer behind IBM's Harvard Mark I computer.

Jan 28, 2016 · Aiken received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Wisconsin in 1923, and went to Harvard for post-graduate studies. He received his M.A. (1937) and Ph.D. (1939) degrees in physics from Harvard, where he remained as a faculty instructor first, and as a professor later.
Howard Aiken invented the Mark I calculator, the first large-scale digital computer, at Harvard in 1944. He also designed the Mark II, III, and IV computers, and founded his own company.
