Biography. Robert A. Frosch earned a BA from Columbia College in 1947, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1952. Beginning in 1951 at Hudson Laboratories of Columbia University, he studied environmental variables that affect very long range sound propagation in the ocean.

During his term, the space shuttle program made significant progress, including the approval of a four-orbiter fleet. The first orbiter, space shuttle Enterprise, completed atmospheric test flights and vibration testing, and workers completed assembly of Columbia.
His desire to discover alternative transportation technologies led to research on a new generation of electric and hybrid vehicles. Dr. Frosch is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.
