Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna are awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 for discovering one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. Researchers can use these to change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision.

Learn about Nanoscience. Emmanuelle Charpentier is a French biochemist, microbiologist and geneticist. She studied at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, receiving a degree in biochemistry in 1991, and obtained her PhD in microbiology at the Pasteur Institute there in 1995.
Emmanuelle is the inventor and co-owner of the core intellectual property of the CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Together with Rodger Novak and Shaun Foy, she co-founded CRISPR Therapeutics and ERS Genomics to develop the CRISPR-Cas genome engineering technology for biotechnology and biomedical applications.
