Apr 10, 2024 · Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla is his last name spelled backward) was born in 1738 to a family of Parisian grocers and caterers. As a teenager, he learned to tell fortunes with playing cards; and in 1757 he began studying tarot with some elderly Italian card readers.
