Babar the Elephant ( UK: / ˈbæbɑːr /, US: / bəˈbɑːr /; French pronunciation: [babaʁ]) is an elephant character who first appeared in 1931 in the French children's book Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff. [ 1] The book is based on a tale that Brunhoff's wife, Cécile, had invented for their children. [ 2]
Babar is the King of Celesteville. As a young elephant, he is forced to watch as his mother is killed by the Hunter during a jungle poaching expedition. He subsequently flees, ending up in Paris, where he is adopted by Madame and learns city ways, such as formal education and clothing.
