The Pony Express was a system of U.S. mail delivery that operated from April 3, 1860, until October 1861. It consisted of continuous horse-and-rider relays between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, with steamers covering the final leg from Sacramento to San Francisco.
The name "Pony Express" evokes images of courageous young men crossing long stretches of country, frequently under harsh conditions, facing the constant threat of death. And, like so many legendary events of the "Old West," there have been wild exaggerations of the facts.

The growing West needed fast mail communication beyond the Rocky Mountains. William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell created the Central Overland California & Pike’s Peak Express Company to carry mail across the county. It later become known as the Pony Express.
