It begins with the news that Ernie's bar, a favorite campus hangout for generations, will be closed along with the other small businesses on the block. All the buildings will then be razed for parking for a new gym the college is building.

The Paper Chase is a 1978 American drama television series based on the 1971 novel of the same name by John Jay Osborn Jr., and a 1973 film adaptation. It follows the lives of law student James T. Hart and his classmates at an unnamed law school, modeled on Harvard Law School.
The show begins with Hart and the gang learning that Ernie's Tavern is being closed in order for the school to build a parking lot. Hart, as usual, decides to go off on a crusade and makes it his sacred duty to stop the march of progress.
