Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

Showtime's Ray Donovan completed its Season 1 run tonight, and the most one can really say is that the last couple of episodes have been on-par with what we've come to expect from the series. The finale didn't derail anything, necessarily, nor did it entirely rebound from the earlier stumbles. As a viewer, I am left with only minimal interest, at best, in the ongoing saga of the Donovan family; which ultimately, speaks volumes.

Ray Donovan came in with a strong pilot, full of promise. The idea of Jon Voight and Liev Schreiber, with their formidable combined talents, sharing the screen, going mano-a-mano as a father and son standing at the center of a fractured, and at least in part criminal, family, offered an inherent draw. Added to that, was Ray. He was an intrigue as a character who was neither a contemporary antihero, nor a classic hero, but rather, seemingly, a man struggling to do right in the confines of a corrupt, but mostly legal, framework. There was a lightness to his Hollywood antics that balanced the family angst.

Overtime, that nuance dissolved, as Ray proved himself to be a blackmailing murderer and yes, just one more "look at the good in this bad guy, surprise he loves his family" protagavillain. Equally disappointing was that Voight and Schreiber were rarely in scenes together that lasted for more than a few moments, a wasted opportunity unto itself. Finally, as the weeks progressed it became increasingly clear that Mickey was simply no match for Ray. In fact, as the depth of his ineptitude crystallized, it was nearly impossible to believe that the sharp-as-a-tack, there's no problem to complex for me to find an easy solution to, Ray was genetically linked to the delusional, not the sharpest tool in the shed, acts without thinking, small time crook, Mickey. Where will the Donovan family go from here?Which would have been fine, but the series initially painted Mick as a formidable big bad and then methodically proceed to neuter and otherwise neutralize him as a legitimate threat. In fact, the show about a fixer stayed true to its premise in that there really was no issue Ray couldn't find a way to solve, or swing in his favor, which, unfortunately removed any real sense of weight or consequence from the story. Eventually, any tension deflated, as it became clear that Ray's catchphrase ought to be, "Next time, ya'll best bring some kryptonite."

Ultimately, Ray Donovan makes its Season 1 exit without having destroyed the series' potential, but never having truly fulfilled it, either. There's still room for this show to blossom in its second season; to clarify what kind of story it wants to tell, the tone it wants to strike, and what it hopes to achieve. As of the finale, though, the charac...
