Note: I've watched all 13 Aquarius episodes and compiled a big Season 1 review here. There you'll also find all 13 of my individual episode reviews. Due to the volume, they're mostly short-takes though.
Billed as an "event series," Aquarius' final episode played like a standard season finale with dangling threads, lingering mysteries, and the Manson Family still two years out from the infamous massacre. I entered this series thinking (given the labeling) it might play like a miniseries, with more of a focused point and applied endgame, even though the 13-episode ordered more surely implied a "season" of TV.
And, in the end, that's what this was. A season. Labeled an "event series" in case it stumbled in the ratings and never returned. Then NBC could pretend that a one-and-done approach was always the intent. Anyhow, "Old Ego is a Too Much Thing" played like a season ender. And since it the show got renewed for a Season 2, fans can rest easy knowing the story will continue on for now.
Aquarius gave us a very busy season finale, filled with big moments and sick reveals. I wasn't keen on Sam finding himself under investigation after he'd already confessed his crime to the police commissioner, but the rest of this piece worked overall.
