Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA (/ ˈ k aʊ f m ə n / KOWF-mən; 30 October 1741 – 5 November 1807), usually known in English as Angelica Kauffman, [a] was a Swiss Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome.
A remarkable pioneer, Angelica Kauffman made art similar to other talented women artists but did so not from the fringes, but from the very center of the recognised British art establishment. She was cultured, widely travelled, and multi-lingual from childhood.
