George Bird Grinnell was a New Yorker who studied and preserved the stories and cultures of Plains Indians, especially the Pawnees, Blackfeet, and Cheyennes. He also shaped the early American conservation movement and accompanied Custer in the Black Hills.
Although George Bird Grinnell — considered by many now and during his own era “the father of American conservation” — was not a member of OWAA, he probably should be acknowledged as it patron saint. By the time OWAA was founded in 1927, Grinnell was nearly 80 years old.
