Gard took over on December 15, 2015, after Bo Ryan announced his retirement as head coach of the Badgers. Gard is a native of Cobb, Wisconsin .
Gard has led the Badgers to five of the top-19 winningest seasons in program history. Gard has guided the Badgers to a conference record of 104-70. During the 2023-24 season, he became the sixth-fastest coach to reach 100 Big Ten wins in the last 50 years trailing only Bob Knight, Bo Ryan, Thad Matta, Tom Izzo and Gene Keady.

- Gard is Ryan's longest-tenured assistant. Despite only being 44 years old, Gard was in the middle of his 23rd consecutive season as an assistant coach under Ryan before being elevated to the interim job, dating back all the way back to their days at UW-Platteville and UW-Milwaukee.
- Gard is also among the most well-respected assistants in the country. As far as actual acumen, it's hard to come more well-respected than Gard. Beyond Ryan's obvious appreciation, plenty of others -- both journalists and coaches alike -- have said in the past Gard is near the top of the list when it comes to the best assistants in college hoops.
