Richard Smith (born 25 May 1959) is a Welsh musician and composer. He is a founding member of British electronic music group Underworld and an acclaimed composer, having collaborated extensively with director Danny Boyle, most notably as the musical director for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony, alongside Underworld's Karl Hyde.

Jan 24, 2024 · Rick Smith, from Ammanford, Wales, and Karl Hyde, from Bewdley, Worcestershire, met in Cardiff while studying, and formed post-punk band The Screen Gemz, releasing one single in 1979. In the early ’80s, Smith and Hyde started synthpop group Freur, and released two albums through major labels Epic and CBS, ‘Doot-Doot’ and ‘Get Us Out Of Here’.
