Cheraw ( / tʃəˈrɔː / chə-RAW, locally / ʃəˈrɔː / shə-RAW) is a town on the Pee Dee River in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,040 at the 2020 census. [5] The greater Cheraw area in the zip code 29520 has a population of 13,689 according to the 2019 ACS data.

Jun 25, 2017 · Cheraw has been dubbed as the “Prettiest Town in Dixie,” and with good reason. Its various architectural and historical wonders and natural attractions only add to its small town charm. The town got its name from the Cheraw, a Native American tribe that once lived in the area, along with the Pee Dee tribe.

Cheraw in the 1960s began to diversify her industrial base, and today Cheraw is a prosperous town that takes pride in preserving her past while planning for the future. As Chatham, the town was granted its first U.S. Post Office on April 1, 1807, with Postmaster Mr. Isaac Course.
A serious fire destroyed most of the business district in the 1835, but by the end of the 1850's Cheraw was a prosperous, secure town which served as a regional center of business, education, culture and religion. Citizens of Cheraw played a leading role in South Carolina's secession in 1860.
Apr 15, 2016 · Cheraw has taken pride in its trees and in its historic district, 213 acres of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While continuing to recruit new businesses, Cheraw also preserved its antebellum core, tree-lined streets, and town green.

Cheraw State Park is located in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of South Carolina. This large park is best known for its championship 18-hole golf course and the 300-acre (1.2 km 2) Lake Juniper, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
