Frederick, city, seat (1748) of Frederick county, north-central Maryland, U.S., situated on a tributary of the Monocacy River 47 miles (76 km) west of Baltimore. Laid out in 1745 as Frederick Town, it was presumably named for Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore.
