So, in 1566, wrote Thomas Larke, surveyor to Sir William Petre, about Ingatestone Hall, the new house that Sir William had built twenty-five years earlier in the midst of his Essex estates. Since then, the house has passed through the hands of fifteen generations of the Petre family who continue to own and occupy it today.
Ingatestone Hall is a Grade I listed 16th-century manor house in Essex, England. It is located outside the village of Ingatestone, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south west of Chelmsford and 25 miles (40 km) north east of London. The house was built by Sir William Petre, and his descendants ( the Barons Petre) live in the house to this day.

Ingatestone Hall is a 16th-century mansion built by Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to four Tudor monarchs. The house is still occupied by his descendants and contains furniture, pictures and memorabilia accumulated over the centuries.
Ingatestone Hall remained in the family and was used as a holiday retreat or a residence for the dowager or married heir. However, the ninth Lord Petre, for one, took up more permanent residence at the Hall during the six year period (1764-1770) during which the grandiose new Thorndon Hall was being built to a Palladian design by James Paine.
