McPherson (/ m ə k ˈ f ɜːr s ən / mək-FUR-sən) is a city in and the county seat of McPherson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 14,082. The city is named after Union General James Birdseye McPherson, a Civil War general. It is home to McPherson College and Central Christian College.
- Downtown McPherson. Main Street McPherson is pretty close to a perfect central commercial district. Every business you can find here is locally owned, and it may take you a long time to traverse these few blocks from the railroad tracks down to Skancke Street.
- McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation. McPherson lays claim to one of the best local history museums in the state. This was founded in the 1960s when the city and McPherson College combined their collections.
- McPherson Opera House. A deserved source of local pride, the McPherson Opera House is a thriving performing arts venue dating back to 1889, and completing an $8.5 million renovation in 2010.
- All Schools Day. This unique festival dates back to 1914, making it the longest running celebration of its kind in the nation. The roots of All Schools Day go back to a parade and banquet in honor of eighth grade graduates, and this has evolved into a whole week of events and activities for families to enjoy.
- McPherson Museum And Arts Foundation. The perfect place to start your visit to McPherson is at the McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation. It’s located on the main road going into town from the Interstate.
- McPherson Community Building. Continue your tour of the Globe Refiners at the Community Building and walk out on the very same basketball court the team played on many years ago.
- Shop McPherson Main Street. A walkable Main Street features shops up and down the street, including The Cooks Nook, where you can pick up a gift or two and sample the richest piece of fudge you will have ever tasted.
- Dine In McPherson. Small towns have some of the best places to eat. I love how they cater to locals and visitors alike. One place that caught my attention and one we were hosted at was Ristorante Italiano di Famiglia.
General McPherson was a Civil War Union officer for whom the city and county is named. At age 35 he was killed during the Battle of Atlanta, six years prior to the founding of McPherson County. Why is the community named for a man who never entered the state of Kansas?
