City of Montebello. The history of Montebello dates back 100 years to the days of the indigenous Tongvan peoples and the first Franciscan Missionaries, who, on September 9, 1771, established the original San Gabriel Mission near where San Gabriel Boulevard now crosses the Rio Hondo River.
Montebello (Italian for "Beautiful Mountain") is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, located just east of East Los Angeles and southwest of San Gabriel Valley. It is an independent city 8 mi (13 km) east of downtown Los Angeles.
For 93 years, Fairmont Le Château Montebello has been known for its rustic charm, unique architecture and beautiful natural surroundings. Originally an agricultural community, Montebello boasted having the ideal climate, productive soil, and an abundance of water. From the turn of the century and through the 1920's, the area was famed for its production of flowers, vegetables, berries, and fruits.
