Mount Albert (Māori: Ōwairaka) is an inner suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, which is centred on Ōwairaka / Mount Albert, a local volcanic peak which dominates the landscape. By 1911, growth in the area had increased to the point where Mount Albert was declared an independent borough, which was later absorbed into Auckland.

Mount Albert is an interior suburb of Auckland Central, New Zealand, based on Mount Albert, a local volcanic peak that dominates the area. Unitec Institute of Technology is situated in the north of the suburb. The Mount Albert Research Centre hosts the Auckland Centre for Plant & Food Research.
Ōwairaka / Mt Albert - maunga history. What’s in a name? The maunga has had a number of names over the centuries indicating the various layers of settlement in the area. When early Māori occupation occurred the mountain was known as Te Puke o Ruarangi (referring to the occupation by Ruarangi).
