It is Aberdeenshire's biggest settlement, with a population of 18,537 at the 2011 Census. [5] . The Admiralty Gateway is the main gateway into the prison and named as such because of the old connection where prisoners worked in the quarry to quarry stone for the breakwater the Admiralty needed.
