    It is the capital of the Upper Palatinate subregion of the state. With more than 150,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is the fourth-largest city in the State of Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg and the 8th largest of all cities on the Danube river.

    • St Peter’s Cathedral. Seen as the pinnacle of southern German Gothic art, Regensburg cathedral is the kind of monument that can keep you enthralled for hours.
    • Haidplatz. A triangular square in the centre of the old town, Haidplatz was the scene of jousting tournaments in the middle ages. The dominant building is the fortress-like Goldenes Kreuz (Golden Cross), a patrician house, the oldest elements of which date to the 13th century.

As well as being a wonder to behold, the Altes Rathaus is suffused with history, as from 1594 to 1806 it was the venue for the Holy Roman Imperial Diet (assemblies).
