West Derby (/ ˈ d ɑːr b i / ⓘ DAR-bee) is a suburb of Liverpool, England. It is located east of the city and is also a Liverpool City Council ward . At the 2011 Census , the population was 14,382.
West Derby was once the centre of administration in the north west of England. As well as the seat of the Molyneux family, the township had its own castle and courthouse. However, as Liverpool grew in importance, West Derby was overshadowed by its near neighbour, and evolved into a wealthy suburb in the 19th Century.
West Derby, a parish mainly in the county borough of Liverpool, but partly in the administrative county of Lancaster. It is also one of the parliamentary divisions of Liverpool. The area of the portion in the municipal borough is 674 acres; population, 76,971; of the administrative or rural portion, 5529 acres; population, 37,702.

As a royal manor it stands first in Domesday Book in the description of the land 'Between Ribble and Mersey,' and with its six berewicks was assessed at four hides; there was land for fifteen ploughs; and a forest two leagues long and one broad, with an aery of hawks.
West Derby was one of the eight hundreds of Lancashire, fifteen townships came under its durisdiction and its boundaries reached as far west as Moss St, Islington. Over the centuries it was in turn inhabited by the Danes, Anglo-Saxons, and until 13thC. stood in a forest 11 miles long/2 miles wide.
